Killing Us Softly 4, with Ed. D Jean Kilbourne

I really like the Killing Us Softly series as an introduction to understanding how women are framed within the media but we shouldn’t pretend that these videos are in any way fat positive. We also shouldn’t pretend that she is speaking for women, other than women who are primarily white, thin and cis gender. She talks about WOC but it is only as a side topic. She talks about an obsession with thinness but then within minutes is talking about the “obesity epidemic” and how it is something we should be worried about.

The framing of fatness in a negative way is a good example of how feminist spaces are often hostile toward women with multiple intersecting identities. We really need to move past feminism that ignores experiences that are not just geared toward white thin cis women and instead expand to include the range of identities that should be included within the category of women.

I’ve also seen every version of this talk and it still needs a lot of work.
